Radar Brothers – Horses and Warriors

Got another one from that post at Bradleysalmanac. This band, Radar Brothers, is new to me, and their stuff on myspace doesn’t thrill me. But this single is from their newest album, set to be released in March, and it does thrill me. I don’t know if thrill is the right word, but I wanted to make a contrast with the previous statement. I’ll look forward to hearing more from this album or SXSW.

Here’s another Shearwater song off their new album coming out Feb. 23. The band is going on tour soon and coming to Chapel Hill in March/April so keep an eye out if you’re liking their music as much as Ed and I. I have to give Ed props for sending me this link.

Midlake – Rulers, Ruling All Things

Midlake – Rulers, Ruling All Things
Album: The Courage of Others

Pretty sweet post on the source for this one. It was only a matter of time till I posted one of the songs from the new Midlake album (out February 2nd,) and that time is now. I’m content with the pair of new singles, but I’m not blown away like I was with Roscoe. Apparently they do a good job shrugging off their Fleetwood Mac sound with this new album, but that didn’t bother me at all before. I just want to be engaged. Edit: You can stream the whole album at npr! http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=122295086&ft=1&f=1039

Vijay Iyer Trio – Mystic Brew

Historicity album art

I’ve decided to challenge the listeners a little more this year, starting with this post. Vijay Iyer is a jazz pianist and composer from NYC that Jenny and I saw at UNC last summer. This album included covers of several pop songs from a variety of artists such as MIA, Stevie Wonder, and Leonard Bernstein as well as three original pieces. It’s a good transition album if you’re not a big jazz lover, which is why I like it.

Fyfe Dangerfield – She Needs Me

Fyfe Dangerfield – She Needs Me
Album: Fly Yellow Mood

Ok, I’m breaking a cardinal rule of mine. I don’t really love this song, but it’s relevant and it needs to be mentioned for those of you out there who do like it, so I’m posting it anyway. Here’s the deal: This is off a solo album from the lead singer of the Guillemots, released this month in the UK. If you are unfamiliar with the Guillemots, you should check out Trains to Brazil, a pretty exceptional song released my junior year, 2006. According to indiepaws, most of the album is pretty subdued compared to this. And if this is the best they’ve got of the more grand stuff, I’m not really that interested. I would have posted Trains to Brazil if I had the mp3, but I’ve only got the Apple free download from back then. I think I’ll keep it as a relic of the past.

Posting one of my favorites tonight. I’ve wanted to post this for a long time but couldn’t find a link. Bernhard Fleischmann is an Austrian drummer who does mostly electronica. I’m always impressed when artists are able to create such compelling and emotional music with such a sparse approach.

Lawrence Arabia – Apple Pie Bed

Chant Darling album art

All songs considered comes through again. I’ve been scrounging through all the blogs I can find every chance I got, but I didn’t like anything. Lawrence Arabia is the pseudonym for James Milne, who is from New Zealand and has performed with The Brunettes as well as played bass for Okkervil River. This song is maybe too reminiscent of the 50’s but it’s still pretty cool to hear something new, even if it uses well known chord progressions (and is it fair to call it Of Montreal harmonies?).

Mumford and Sons – White Blank Page

Sigh No More album art

This band’s been on some blog lists for 2009, but the album it is from, Sigh No More, will not be released in the US until February. I almost couldn’t wait to post this. I’ve spent the whole day listening to the album on Grooveshark, and it is great. I love the banjo in this song and the double time at the end.

I promise this is my last Spoon post for this album. This is actually Ed’s favorite off the album, so I’m basically filching it from him, but I’ve been listening to the album too much these last few days not to represent it in some way (other than the two other less sweet but still cool songs we’ve linked in the past few months).
