Richard Swift – The Atlantic Ocean

I was about to post a song from this year’s Noah and the Whale album, but I figured I’d do something different that people might not know. I say that because I have never heard of this guy and I only know what I read on wikipedia. He toured with Wilco for a bit. Anyway this song is upbeat and catchy, which is kinda weird because he’s singing about me drowning. It is a bit repetitive, though.

The second Flight of the Conchords album came out a little while ago. I haven’t seen more than two episodes of the second season, but will watch the whole thing eventually. If you missed the first season you should rent it and catch up. The first half of this song is hilarious.

You might recognize this from the FIFA10 soundtrack. EA usually does well at finding cool bargain songs for their games.

Ok I’m giving a bonus post today because I just couldn’t decide between these two. I think it’s necessary to show the variety that this band can give. Casiokids is a synth pop group from Norway who I discovered at rjominn.is. They released their first album in 2006, and these are both single releases from this year.

Julian Casablancas – River of Brakelights

Phrazes for the Young album art

I posted Casablancas earlier this month but I don’t care. I’m so pumped about the album coming out on Nov. 3rd — almost everything I’ve heard has been sweet. I find myself really satisfied with the formula of his music, he knows how to build a theme and gives you a few good rounds of it so you don’t feel let down. I highly recommend Tourist as well if you’re enjoying these tracks. The album will apparently be 5 bones on iTunes so pack your lunches a few days these next two weeks.

The Local Natives – Airplanes

Gorilla Manor album art

Heard this band on kexp. They are releasing their debut album on Nov. 3, and this is one of their promotional tracks. They are touring with White Rabbits and then Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes. I like this song enough, but I do feel like it suffers from a lack of focus.

These United States – I Want You To Keep Everything
Album: Everything Touches Everything

Fairly new and appropriately named band from D.C. I probably heard this first on indiestreetcred. Pretty good and upbeat song, but to me the band brushes dangerously close to country. I’m on edge during every song just waiting for the steel guitar to kick in and ruin it all.

Starlight Mints – Zoomba

Starlight Mints – Zoomba
Album: Change Remains

This album was released on June 21st and I haven’t listened to it so I can’t recommend the band on the whole. That said, I enjoy all the hooks in this song quite a lot even if they do hint of the brass from Dylan’s Everybody Must Get Stoned and the guitar riffs from The Cold War Kid’s Hang Me Out to Dry. I was going to throw the last five seconds of the theme song from Wild and Crazy Kids in there, but thought that was first of all too obscure and secondly too cruel to link that song here for anyone unfortunate enough to click on it.

The Beta Band – Dry the Rain

Champion Versions (EP) album art
The Beta Band – Dry the Rain
Album: Champion Versions (EP)

I think I first heard this on the New York radio station I listen to. This is from a British Band in 1997, but I only just now heard it (probably because 1997 was like 7th grade for me when I didn’t listen to any pop music at all). I have to give props to the blog I’m linking as they have a pretty good mix of songs dealing with the theme of rain.

The Faint – Birth

The Faint – Birth
Album: Wet From Birth

I went out with this girl a couple of times recently and she let me borrow a CD of The Faint. It doesn’t look like it’s going to work out with the girl, but it’s definitely going to work out between me and her Wet From Birth CD. Just a note, the source for this doesn’t seem to be an active blog, they just host the mp3. And also, I’m not planning to steal this girl’s CD – I just have to figure out how to get it back to her.
