The Coral – Dreaming of You

The Coral album art

I feel like me enjoying this song makes me a hypocrite in some way but I can’t say exactly why. Maybe it’s that the back-beat doesn’t bug me but when it’s ska with a back-beat like this it’s a deal breaker. Who knows, either way, I enjoy this song by a band I hadn’t heard of until yesterday. The song came out back in 2002, while I was in high school…crazy.

Why? And Themselves – Canada

N/A album art

Hey we’re finally back from our break. Heard this while checking out some hyped Chromeo stuff on the sourced blog. I’ve never really cared much about lyrics, but this weekend we had to sensor a lot of our music for the wedding. I had no idea how much of my music had bad words in it. The lyrics to this could be questionable, but I couldn’t find them to double check. Oh well, still a cool song.

Album: Captain Morgan’s Revenge

NPR posted a pretty funny song by this band last weekend which apparently encompassed International Talk Like a Pirate Day. I couldn’t find a link to that one but here’s another pirate song by the same band. My capacity for finding new music has been seriously limited by choosing wedding music the last few days.

Album: We Are Not the Infadels

Gotta dip back to the old days of Junior year for this one. I went through a British rock kick for a while, with the Arctic Monkeys getting uber popular around then.

The Rosebuds – Life Like

Life Like album art

This is a 2008 song from a Raleigh, NC band. They’re on the Merge Records label and are a quality band. I have to admit though that I haven’t paid enough attention to them given their proximity to me.

Harlem Shakes – Strictly Game

If these two posts don’t sate your hunger for the Harlem Shakes (which coincidentally also happens to be the name of my friend’s patented Wii Golf putting technique…) listen to “Sunlight” or the rest of the album.

Harlem Shakes – Natural Man

Harlem Shakes – Natural Man
Album: Technicolor Health

Just heard the tail end of “Natural Man” on 88.1, and I had to hear more. At first I think they might be a little bit too much of a pop style Neutral Milk Hotel, but then it gets to the chorus and I think “oh yeah, this is why I’m listening to this song…”. Unfortunately, with music and most other things, if I see something that’s a little concerning at first, give it time and those concerns grow into dealbreakers. Still, I really like most of the songs on this album and had to do an unprecedented double post! And the source post for this song has 75 other songs of 2009… definitely check them out.

Micah P. Hinson – Running Scared
Album: All Dressed Up and Smelling of Strangers

Micah P. Hinson is a singer/songwriter from Texas. He’s about to release a two disc cover album of songs by Dylan, The Beetles, Elvis, Leonard Cohen, and Roy Orbison, among others. I was torn between posting this one and a 2006 song, Jackeyed. This one out because Roy Orbison pwns and it’s more current.

Taken By Trees – My Boys (Animal Collective Cover)

East of Eden album art

Taken by Trees is a solo project by a Swedish woman, Victoria Bergsman. This album was released on the 8th of this month and I listened to it today at NPR’s First Listen. It certainly has a unique sound that she makes her own but I can only tolerate so much out of tune flute. I’d say it’s for the more open-minded listeners for sure. I assume Ed won’t appreciate this post but he can deal.

Kid Cudi – Pursuit of Happiness (Feat. MGMT & Ratatat)
Album: Man on the Moon: The End of Day

Kid Cudi is releasing his debut album this Tuesday, and it’s getting a lot of buzz (not all good) online. I really don’t like Day N’ Night and the 80 million listens it has on his myspace, but this song features Ratatat and MGMT, so it’s hard to hate. From the couple of songs I’ve heard off the album (I think you can hear them all on his Myspace page) I like this the best.
