Blonde Redhead – 23

23 album art

This song is the reason we started Rock and Rowe. I was at West End Wine Bar and heard this playing. Totally recognized it but didn’t remember who it was. Never again. Blonde Redhead is from the US but they sing in multiple languages. If you like this song, you will like their myspace page. And check this out – they have twins in their band! Well, they are working on a seventh album, and I will definitely keep my eyes peeled.

God is an Astronaut – All is Violent, All is Bright

God is an Astronaut – All is Violent, All is Bright
Album: All is Violent, All is Bright

This is a band my roomate in college recommended to me. They’re an instrumental group out of Ireland. I haven’t listened to their newest album much, but the album that this one is off of is good if you’re in the mood for ambient music.

Hercules and Love Affair – Blind

Hercules and Love Affair – Blind
Album: Hercules and Love Affair

This song is a perfect candidate for Rock and Rowe because even though I love this song, the rest of the album is too mellow for me. I’m definitely on board with disco but only the songs that have energy. It came out in March 2008 but didn’t make a lot of top charts. Antony Hegarty from Antony and the Johnsons is a member of this band, and he sings the vocals in this song, if you can’t tell.

Devotchka – The Last Beat of My Heart

Album: Curse Your Little Heart

I’ve been looking for a reason to post Devotchka and found this one from 2006 today. If you don’t know them you will recognize them from the Little Miss Sunshine Soundtrack. This is a cover of a Siouxsie and the Banshees song. I have an appreciation for the melodramatic, which I’ve definitely expressed in my last few posts.

Placebo – Battle for the Sun

Battle for the Sun album art
Placebo – Battle for the Sun
Album: Battle for the Sun

My fist experience with Placebo was with their single Infra-Red from a few years back. That song was good while it kept me guessing, but after that I found their sound got stale. For me, Placebo’s singles are hot for a while, but cool off quickly. I’ve had the same experience with this song and their other single from the album, “For What It’s Worth”. After this I think I already know how the rest of the album will sound, so I doubt I’ll be listening to the rest of it. If you want, though, you can check it out here: http://www.placeboworld.co.uk/

Yeasayer – 2080
Album: All Hour Cymbals

Yeasayer is a psychedelic rock band out of Brooklyn that has one album out, released in 2007. My sister requested that we post them so I went with one of their more popular. If you can’t understand all the lyrics in this don’t worry, the kids at the end have no idea what they are either.

Elefant – Lolita

The Black Magic Show album art
Elefant – Lolita
Album: The Black Magic Show

I heard this band on Pandora when I was in school. I really like this song, but otherwise I forgot about the band. As the title suggests, this is indeed about the Lolita story, but you might hear him calling the girl “Lola” rather than “Lolita”. It is still talking about jail bait. Elefant doesn’t have a very deep catalog, so you can decide if they are worth following or not.

Regina Spektor – Blue Lips

Far album art

I had a hard time posting this one as I have some difficulty embracing her music for reasons I won’t go into. But then I saw that this particular song was produced by Jeff Lynne, producer of the Traveling Wilburys, which my family listened to a lot growing up. Since Father’s day is Sunday, it seemed fitting. The album is entirely streamable on NPR’s site here.

Moby – Pale Horses

Wait For Me album art
Moby – Pale Horses
Album: Wait For Me

Moby is a DJ who has been around for a while, but I can’t say I’ve been familiar with his work. Fun fact – he did the last track from the Born Ultimatum soundtrack. Also, he collaborated with Oscar the Punk on an EP that shipped with Bioshock. I blew past this song when I watched the video, but after listening to the album on NPR’s Exclusive First Listen, I grew to really like it. The video compliments the fairly bleak and depressing song. Anyway, you should check out the CD on npr’s site before it goes on sale June 22.
